Maties Sport and Tennis South Africa are collaborating on a new high-performance tennis project at Stellenbosch University. As a result, the parties are looking to jointly recruit a new Head Coach for Maties Tennis. The role is a full-time, 2yr fixed term contract position and expected to grow as the aforementioned project.

The Maties Tennis Head Coach provides expertise within the new coaching structure of Maties Tennis. All activities are focused on the achievement of the following strategic objectives of Maties Sport:

  1. Improvement of the SU student-athlete diversity profile;
  2. Achieve a dominant position within focus sports at Tertiary, Regional and National level;
  3. Develop world class sportsmen and women;
  4. Raise the percentage of competitive sportsmen and sportswomen who achieve academic success;
  5. Deliver an excellent tertiary sports experience;
  6. Social Impact;
  7. Expand the academic footprint and explore the presentation of a different academic offering.

The Maties Tennis Head Coach will establish and facilitate a productive and positive working environment to optimise the planned new Centre of Excellence within the Maties Sport and Tennis South Africa partnership, involving all coaches and student-athletes within the Maties Tennis Club. The Head Coach will report directly to the Head: Maties Sport High Performance and working closely with the High-Performance Manager of Tennis South Africa and the Maties Tennis Club Manager.

The position of a Maties Tennis Head Coach is a leadership as well as a high-performance coaching position. The Head Coach is required to have the ability to not only to coach various formats within tennis, but they are also expected to provide leadership for other Maties Tennis club coaches for the implementation of the high-performance programme for their players. General expectations include the following:

  • Top quality technical coaching to selected student-athletes on the Maties Tennis HP program;
  • Appropriate periodization of the training & competition year for his/her student-athletes, as well as support for the year planning of other Maties Tennis club coaches;
  • Implementation of the Maties Sport Integrated Medicine and Science (IMAS) HP program, in collaboration with the Head of Maties Sport High Performance;
  • The use of technology to improve coaching, training and performance;
  • Facilitation of the involvement of self, other coaches, trainers and HP student-athletes in the Maties Sport PACER holistic empowerment program;
  • Collaboration with the Club Manager in the implementation of talent identification, recruitment and retention activities in line with the Maties Sport Recruitment and Retention Plan;
  • Participation in a variety of continuing professional development activities, including those presented by the High-Performance Unit.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Leadership

  •  Understand the district, provincial, national and international context within which the tennis operates and the role that sport coaching plays in promoting transformation and excellence within Stellenbosch University;
  • Implement a club coaching structure platform on which the development of excellence in student-athletes’ performances can be based;
  • Operate to a high level of effectiveness and efficiency within the structures of the Maties Tennis Club and Maties Sport;
  • Communicate a clear picture of what the High-Performance programme looks like based on an analysis of the needs of the student-athletes;
  • Implement the values, goals and the direction to be taken by student-athletes and other Maties Tennis club coaches in order to achieve the objectives of the High-Performance programme;
  • Develop a sound strategy to realise the objectives of the High-Performance program;
  • Provide leadership for the other Maties Tennis club coaches and student-athletes;
  • Establish good working relationships with all Maties Tennis club coaches;
  • Build & maintain healthy relationships with student-athletes, assistants, other coaches, trainers and performance enhancement service providers and personnel within the Integrated Medicine and Science Program and key personnel with the Sport Club;
  • Optimise the implementation of the Maties Sport Recruitment and Retention Plan, including:
  1. A systematic approach to talent identification, scouting and recruitment that corresponds with SU admissions policy and academic requirements.
  2. The full participation of student-athletes in the Maties Sport PACER programme aimed at ensuring both academic and holistic personal development.
  • Ensure that Maties Tennis is a force in University-related competitions, and broadening the participation of Maties Tennis in national and international competitions;
  • Full inclusion of athletes with disabilities in the structure.

Coaching Environment

  • Develop an action plan for the code for the year within a broader multi-year plan, including a timeline for review and adjustments in the plan;
  • Establish clarity in terms coaching roles and the identification of key performance indicators that will become the basis for work performance evaluations of coaches;
  • Collaborate with the Tennis Club Manager to implement a formal talent ID, recruitment, retention, monitoring system for current and future student-athletes;
  • Establish protocols to deal with key safety issues that may occur during coaching sessions and competitions;
  • Establish an environment where student-athletes are treated with respect;
  • Model appropriate personal conduct, ethical behaviour and professional standards;
  • Oversee appropriate behaviour from all coaches, assistants and trainers;
  • Be familiar with (and willing to utilize) reporting systems for inappropriate behaviour;
  • Collaborate with the Tennis Club Manager to establish codes of conduct for student-athletes, teams, coaches, trainers and managers, with good practice in line with sport-specific national and international norm;
  • Ensure adherence to all anti-doping legislation pertaining to athlete and coach and sign the Declaration to support the drug-free sport;
  • Providing regular feedback to all coaching participants both on and off the court to encourage them to achieve their best results possible. 

Integrated Medicine and Science

  • Collaborate with the Maties High-Performance Unit as part of the Tennis performance enhancement team to optimise the pre-participation medical screenings and injury management of student-athletes within the Maties Sport Injury Clinic and injury management programme;
  • Optimise the implementation if the Maties Sport High-Performance IMAS programme with the Maties Tennis HP squad of student-athletes;
  • The Maties Tennis Head Coach works closely with the Maties Tennis Club Manager, HP Unit strength & conditioning trainers and other IMAS service providers;
  • Provide leadership relating to:
    • Periodization of training for the Tennis HP squad, utilising the IMAS service menu;
  • Evidence-based performance enhancement interventions within the field of sports medicine and science;
  • The implementation of sport technology-based interventions including performance analysis, testing and monitoring to enhance the performance of athletes;
  • The use of technology to improve coaching, training and performance;
  • Coach student-athletes;
  • Support and manage student-athlete participation at competitions.

Empowerment

  • Understand and have knowledge of the HP Tennis “big picture” – provincial, national, federations etc;
  • Facilitation of the involvement of self, other coaches, trainers and HP student-athletes in the Maties Sport PACER holistic empowerment program;
  • Understand and have knowledge of the HP Tennis “big picture” – provincial, national, federations etc;
  • Provide mentorship for student-athletes and club coaches in the delivery of Community Impact Projects;
  • Implement a programme for coach mentorship and coach education that will contribute to the sustainability of excellence in sports performance by Maties student-athletes;
  • Collaborate with the HP Unit in the management of Accelerated Development Bursaries of identified student-athlete in the HP Tennis squad.

Vital Hotel Wolfgangsee has an exciting opportunity to offer a coach at their resort in Austria.

Position:

We need a coach to join our small friendly team of South African coaches.

We cater for beginners to advanced tournament players, young and old.

We run 2 tennis programmes for our hotel guests per week “Happy” 5 X 90 minute sessions and “Intensive” 10 X 90 minute sessions.

In July/August group coaching is normally Monday – Friday in groups of 3-4 of a similar standard. In other months there can be 2 groups per week, so there is also coaching Sundays.

The coaches run a weekly entertainment programme for guests.

2 evening fun tournaments 1 singles and 1 doubles plus video analysis, (each coach is responsible for 1 event) In addition the tennis coaches give a weekly exhibition match.

On Saturdays, tournaments are arranged for most of the players and in the evening prizes are given and coaches have to socialize with the guests.

Qualification:

You will need to be experienced,  play to a VERY good standard and have to have a coaching qualification ( preferably the professional level) . it could be a deciding factor if you are in possession of a  EU passport , would be prepared to coach for about 3 seasons  .
This coaching position is available from March 2019.
