South African top wheelchair tennis ace Kgothatso Montjane saw her hopes of going another step further in the Australian Open ended by Japanese world number 2 Yui Kamiji at Melbourne Park in Australia on Thursday.

The world number 7 fought but went down to Kamiji 6-3 7-5 in 1 hour and 18 minutes in the semi-final round of the first Grand Slam tournament on the 2020 UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour.

Despite the loss, Montjane can be proud following her great performance on Wednesday dismantling former world number 1 Sabine Ellerbrock of Germany 6-0 6-1 in just 69 minutes to become the first South African wheelchair tennis player to reach the Australian Open Grand Slam semi-final since Lucas Sithole in 2014.
