Team South Africa has enjoyed a sensational week in Maputo, Mozambique, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams claiming gold at the World Tennis/CAT Southern African Junior Teams’ Competition (12 & under).
The competition took place from 11–15 August 2026, bringing together some of the region’s most promising young tennis players. Teams from Madagascar, South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, Angola, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Namibia and Eswatini took part in the competition, showcasing the talent and potential of junior tennis across Southern Africa.
South Africa’s two teams rose to the occasion, producing strong performances throughout the competition to finish at the top of the podium in both the boys’ and girls’ team events.
The boys’ team, made up of Regardt Delport, David Hobson and Alexander Hendricks, proudly represented South Africa on court, while Linja Erasmus, Lesedi Lamola and Liane Steyn formed the girls’ team. Both teams demonstrated determination, teamwork and a fighting spirit.
A huge congratulations to all six players, as well as their captains Mitch Deetlefs and Kyla Yelverton, on an outstanding achievement. Their success is a testament to the talent emerging through South Africa’s junior tennis pathway and provides an exciting glimpse of the future of the sport in the country.
It was a memorable week for South African tennis and another proud moment for our junior players.
