Both top seeds at the Digicall Futures 2 tennis tournament were knocked out in the second round on Thursday.

This is the second of three international Digicall Futures tournaments played at the Coetzenburg courts of the Stellenbosch University.

Benjamin Lock from Zimbabwe was eliminated by Austria’s David Pichler who needed only 60 minutes to beat the number one seed 6-1, 6-2.

Maya Tahan from Israel also did not make it past the second round. She suffered a surprise defeat to Brit Alice Gillan. The unseeded Gillan needed just less than three hours on court to battle past the number one woman’s player to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

It was a tough day at the office for the South African players left in the draw.

Toby Martin (GBR) got the better of second seeded Nic Scholtz. Martin won 6-1, 7-6 and 6-4.

Wildcards Maretha Burger and Madrie le Roux both lost in the second round, while Megan Basson and qualifier Shannon Cox were also eliminated. Burger lost against last week’s champion Ekaterina Makarova (RUS, 3) and Cox against finalist from the first tournament Anastasia Shaulskaya (RUS, 8).

Players through to the quarter-finals are fourth seed woman Katharina Hering (GER), Shahan Biran (ISR, 5) and Peter Nagy (HUN, 3)
